No. The practice of skiing somewhat reflects the evolution of our society and it is not up to "a police force" to change that. Today's equipment and piste preparation allow a beginner skier to hurtle down slopes at sometimes excessive speeds very quickly. Skiers have become accustomed to finding smooth, bump-free slopes every morning. We could start by spacing out their maintenance in certain areas, which would represent savings for the ski lifts and a benefit for the environment. This would slow down speeds and improve skiers' technique, as an increasing number are no longer capable of skiing down a mogul field. We could also have a greater presence of patrollers on the slopes who could observe skiers' behaviour and sometimes intervene to remind them of the basic FIS rules. Not to mention, for children and teenagers, the share of supervision and education that falls to parents.

Yes. The slopes are not a lawless space: the FIS rules serve as a standard of care and violations can have civil or criminal consequences. Nevertheless, around 63,000 skiers and snowboarders are injured in Switzerland every year, and the accidents cause enormous costs. A ski patrol with clear responsibilities would not only provide rescue services, but also have a preventive effect: visible presence at hotspots, consistently setting limits for speeders and tailgaters, properly documenting collisions, defusing dangerous situations and involving the police in serious cases. Combined with clear signage and zones for beginners and families, this would significantly increase safety.
