What kind of "institutions" are we talking about? Are we talking about federal authorities? Are we talking about large companies such as UBS or Swatch? Are we talking about the SBB, which is owned by the Confederation?

I don't think you can say that in such general terms.

Furthermore: What about all the other social media networks? Why should an institution not be allowed on Twitter but be allowed on Bluesky?

What about TikTok or Facebook? Who determines the criteria by which we decide which institutions are allowed to be where or not?

An institution - however one defines who belongs to that category - should be present where its customers are. For some, that's probably Twitter, for others Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

As long as there is no absolutely compelling reason why anyone must withdraw from a social media network, you cannot require anyone to do so.

This year, "W" was presented at the WEF: a direct European alternative to X.

The beta launch is planned for February 2026, with the official launch scheduled for the end of 2026.

Of course, it is very difficult to quickly break free from our dependence on the USA, but one has to start somewhere. I suspect such a transition would progress very slowly, because it would probably be too cumbersome for many people to leave the comfort zone of US products they've been used to for years and get accustomed to something else.

And yet, Swiss and also European institutions should examine – not only but also because of the current developments in the USA – whether it might be a plausible alternative, if it really develops positively.

Perhaps it would be another step in the right direction for social media platforms.
