In itself, it's like pornography: I would really like a simple ban to be enough to stop everything, but it's impossible. Enshrining its prohibition in law and thinking that this will solve the problem is naive at best. Unfortunately, I can only deplore that such an impressive technology that can lead to great things is used to cause so much harm.

Whilst banning deepfakes (sexual, but not only) in themselves is useless, it is however possible (and I encourage this approach) to make a law prohibiting their production. The difference is significant: the technology is not banned, its use for non-personal purposes (posting online, blackmail, etc.) is. This will allow the victim to seek justice and the perpetrator to rot in prison for 15 years with 10 strokes of the cane for wanting to destroy someone's reputation (yes, in my mind justice is not lenient and there are no day-fines for this type of case).

Where current laws are insufficient, we unfortunately need more precise bans and harsher penalties. In this regard, we will also need to target the manufacturers of AI software more, not just the users. The tech corporations can achieve this technically, but it could easily reignite the whole censorship debate and the USA and US corporations might resist any restrictions.

The quality of images and films is also constantly improving, and even if soon everyone knows that you can't believe anything, that doesn't help.

Since this is such a mass phenomenon, we cannot take every individual case to court, but rather the madness must be prevented at the source.
