Talking about a "bottomless pit" is misleading. Switzerland is not over-equipping its air force: it is rebuilding it after decades of underinvestment. Today, the Air Force has only 30 ageing F/A-18C and D Hornets, a few portable Stinger missiles and 35 mm anti-aircraft guns (Oerlikon GDF-005 with Skyguard). This does not allow for credible air defence or sustainable protection of airspace. Current acquisitions (F-35A, Patriot PAC-2 GEM-T, PAC-3 MSE and IRIS-T SLM systems) and future ones (JASSM-ER, armed drones, loitering munitions) address well-identified gaps: surveillance, deterrence, multi-layered ground-to-air defence and long-range action capability. This is not a luxury, but the minimum necessary to guarantee sovereignty, armed neutrality and the protection of the population in a deteriorating security environment.

Given the evolution of modern warfare that we are currently witnessing in Ukraine, and its rapid development, this contrasts sharply with Switzerland's extremely slow political decision-making regarding its armament, which is proving or will prove catastrophic and useless in the event of real need, cf. the purchase of unusable Israeli drones and the purchase of F-35s for a purpose to this day unexplained by our authorities for a supposedly... neutral country that does not project itself beyond our borders! Especially since Switzerland's modern history has shown that our best defence is our financial centre where the billions of all the dictators, autocrats and drug lords from around the world are hidden, via shell companies. But beware, now they want us to swallow the purchase of yet another combat aircraft other than the F-35! Our military pilots still need to enjoy themselves... but I read that there was a major recruitment problem regarding "military pilots" lol!
