Unfortunately, it has become a sport for affluent people, due to the fact that there is less snow in mid-mountain resorts, which forces people to travel to the Alps.

When I was a child, the whole family skied at affordable prices because we didn't need to travel far.

Living in La Chaux-de-Fonds, we had a ski lift on the outskirts of the city and every Wednesday, at weekends and during holidays, we would go skiing.

Unfortunately, the 2023 storm put a definitive end to this possibility because the ski lift was severely damaged and given the winter season which has shortened in terms of snow cover, the profitability of operating a new ski lift would be a colossal challenge.

Whatever people say, skiing affordably is possible. Admittedly, global warming is damaging the sector, but saying that it's becoming unaffordable is false.
- Ski passes: daily passes have become expensive, but season passes such as the Magic Pass are extremely good value: 419 francs for a summer-winter pass. If you compare that with a gym membership or thermal baths membership where you exceed 1,000 francs per year, there's nothing to complain about.
- Equipment: if you look around, there's still plenty of affordable equipment and good deals. Last Black Friday, a Race category ski at Ochsner was available for less than 500 francs. And we're talking about a rather high-end ski!
- Restaurants: if you go to a restaurant for every weekend outing, it drives up the cost, but it's the same everywhere. A dish under 20 francs is rare in lowland areas too.
- Transport: travelling costs money, it's not related to skiing! And today, many resorts are accessible by public transport.
