Young people learn better by themselves. They master English better, and in an operational way, even though they have fewer hours of classes in this language than in German. The simplicity of the language is only a minor factor compared to motivation.

Furthermore, we have implemented a language learning system without ever verifying its real usefulness. There is literally no study on the subject. And nobody seems to be concerned about it. Which is all the more worrying.

Young people have very serious mental health problems (depression, suicidal thoughts, burnout, stress). Reducing the workload and the absurdity of the system could help them. (and incidentally health insurance premiums)

Education contributes significantly to public spending, this is also something to take into account.

German only benefits a minority of French-speaking Swiss and few seem to have confidence in their ability to use it after their schooling or studies. It's not very cost-effective. English is already the majority language of exchange in the professional world. 75% of young people use it regularly.

There are other arguments for giving priority to English and removing language classes. Better communication in the context of inbound and outbound tourism. Migration. Better mobility between different regions or at the border of regions. Also freedom of choice and self-esteem. If you force someone to do something they don't want to do, not only will they do it badly, but they will also blame themselves for doing it badly and will have the impression that they are bad at it.

Furthermore, multilingualism would exist even without school. It already exists particularly in immigrant populations. We don't teach a language just because it has beneficial effects on the brain. There are plenty of things that have these effects on the brain.

I would have asked this question the other way round: Is Switzerland's cohesion important for multilingualism? Because indeed, is multilingualism in Switzerland a goal to be achieved or a sign of national cohesion? Perhaps a bit of both.

For me, multilingualism is above all a goal to be achieved: It will help my children communicate in Swiss German to open doors for them in Berne, Zurich or Basel. However, if I had tremendous difficulty schooling my children in German-speaking Switzerland, as a French-speaking Fribourger (we're supposed to be a bilingual canton), I believe it's mainly because French-speakers are withdrawing into themselves and are no longer interested in German-speaking Switzerland. And I understand the Zurich people who no longer want to teach French to their pupils: why would they make this effort if French-speakers don't do it? Above all, to be honest, the Zurich people have far fewer reasons to be interested in French-speakers.
