The judicious use of 30 km/h is relevant in residential areas. However, the blanket application on main roads only serves to discourage users indiscriminately.

This also creates absurd situations where the 30 km/h zone ends... at the entrance to the residential area! This situation can be observed in Fribourg (Beaumont and Jura neighbourhoods) or in Bulle. It also creates uncertainty about the extent of the zones concerned, with constant changes between 30-50-30; ideal for refilling the coffers with a few strategically placed speed cameras. The lack of logic regarding pedestrian crossings also creates major uncertainty between motorists and pedestrians, such as the crossing in front of Bulle shopping centre and the Toula neighbourhood, where the crossing is convoluted because nothing is really designed for any user (bicycle, car, pedestrian, bus).

So not less, but better: 30 km/h in residential areas and 50 km/h on main roads (with proper surfacing).

Driving at 30km/h is less dangerous, less polluting, less noisy and just as fast as driving at 50. We've all already verified this by being systematically caught up with and eventually overtaken by cyclists. We must stop thinking that cities are made for or belong to motorists.

The city belongs to those who live there (and not to those who are just passing through...). Yet in cities, more than half of households don't own a car.

In cities, people get around on foot, by bicycle or by public transport. It's safe, healthy, quiet and fast. Moreover, this saves space, which can be used for more creative, convivial and collective purposes than the unsightly storage of thousands of tonnes of immobile scrap metal abandoned there when the motorist has reached their destination. In short, those who have chosen to live outside the city must learn to leave their vehicles outside when they come to enjoy urban pleasures.
