Certainly not contemporary. The history of the Swiss national anthem is convoluted. There were the words of J. R. Wyss's "Rufst du, mein Vaterland" (to the melody of God Save the Queen!) and the Swiss Psalm by Alberich Zwyssig, a Cistercian monk from Wettingen Abbey.

After decades of back and forth, in 1961 Zwyssig's Psalm – a work from 1841, seven years before the founding of the Swiss federal state! – was sent out for consultation as a provisional national anthem, but never gained the majority of the cantons.

All efforts for a different anthem were doomed to fail, including those by the then-popular Zurich composer Paul Burkhard, with lyrics by Herbert Meier: in 1973, if I remember correctly, it premiered at the Federal Singing Festival in the City Hall, with a women's choir in traditional costumes, a man on double bass and two with guitars (one a musician from the opera house orchestra, the other the writer).

It was rejected for being too rhythmic! Meanwhile, people have gotten used to the 1841 work!

Beware of the translation error: in French, the question is "Is the Swiss national anthem outdated?", while in German, it's "Is the Swiss national anthem current?". As a result, the comments are contradictory in both camps!

For my part, I find the difference between the lyrics in German, which are as already mentioned here almost a prayer, and in French, where we talk about the beauty of our country and our mountains (we're only referring to the first verse here), very interesting. If the latter are somewhat naive, they are less divisive. But in the end, all anthems are outdated in one way or another, but that's not the question. Having a crowd singing the same song that evokes their country is what's most important. And it doesn't matter if the lyrics are obsolete, they are neither offensive nor shocking. It remains important that this song is taught in schools, it always looks good at a sporting or festive event!
