In the current political climate, the outcome of the latest poll cannot come as a surprise. This appears to be independent of the (declining) number of asylum applications. But couldn't we also be proud of helping other people who are significantly worse off, instead of fearfully viewing them as objects that take something away from us? This would not least greatly improve our own wellbeing.

Helping in cases of hardship that are not self-inflicted is right. I think the problem is HOW help is provided, because all the helping over the past 50-80 years has achieved little to nothing in relation to the effort invested. And how about holding those who cause the problems more accountable?
