The content of the question speaks for itself!

The addition "at all costs" implies a cognitive confirmation bias: "avalanche accident = reckless risk-taking". That's obviously how I read the question.

I still wonder when some people want to limit the choices of others, or worse, take a stance in favour of banning certain leisure activities that are fully legal and accepted by those who practice them.

As if a certain right-thinking morality should "at all costs" dictate the behaviour of others... It's all too often: do as I say, don't do as I do. And in 90% of cases, after an accident. In short, we're much smarter after 😉.

I dare to think that some of the positive responses to this question are emotional and motivated by a certain individual fear.

I'd like to conclude by asserting the right to decide, the right to risk, the right to individual responsibility, the right to self-determination. Especially, of course, in unregulated and unsafe natural spaces. Mountains and mountaineering are an integral part of this.

Unfortunately, my answer is YES.

"At any cost" means exactly what it says... there are (and always will be) people who "want" but don't know, people who "want" but don't have the skills... and these are the people who, once the accident happens, say "finally!?"

We are now in a civil society that is increasingly shirking responsibility. People who don't imagine for a second the consequences of their actions and who pose as victims of their own (bad) decisions.

Not to mention the damage to nature, nor the increasing risks that rescue services take to save their lives, nor to discuss the astronomical costs related to rescues and associated care...
There is only this notion (which I hate above all!) of prohibition, legislation, or even repression that can lead people to consider their actions as sometimes dangerous, useless, and harmful to themselves and, by extension, to others.

I am sorry to see that we must impose the notion of responsibility on a growing number of people... but I am not surprised, because we've reached a point where we have to indicate on matches and lighters... "Caution, fire burns", on water bottles "Caution, water wets", etc... what shocked me the most was the mention in microwave manuals (sic) "Do not dry an animal in the oven"! - This is where we are... poor humanity.
