Shooting animals seems to be the only answer. When you know the percentage of animals killed by this predator, it's far from being a carnage. This percentage is as ridiculous as the amount of Swiss-origin sheep meat present on our shelves. All farmers complain that sheep are not profitable, neither for meat nor for wool, so why continue? For subsidies? As a hobby? In the mountains, we find more and more people who, without the trend of trail running or electric bikes, would probably never have come. Nature regulates itself very well without us. We just need to give it time.

I know the Alp Aion above Cauco in the Calanca Valley, and I also know the Calanca Valley, which has been our three-week summer residence for 30 years. I'm not surprised that television is now mobilising for the protection of wolves - the editors live in the "lowlands", so to speak in a sheltered workshop. It may be that Alp Aion brings the goats into the enclosure overnight, but what about during the day? Wolves are intelligent and will eventually find a way, when the pressure of hunger becomes overwhelming, to kill one or two or three goats despite the presence of herd protection dogs. What bothers me is that a killed domestic animal, be it a sheep, a goat, a cow, a calf or even a donkey, is never shown - one cannot expect readers to see the condition of these animals, can one? Incidentally, I recommend everyone, especially the "urban" population, to read the book "Man, Wolf".
